The Outsiders chapter 9

Reflect on Ponyboy's words on p.141: "..half of the hoods I know are pretty decent guys underneath all the grease, and from what I've heard, a lot of Socs are just cold-blooded mean - but people usually go by looks." Do you agree? Why or why not? Be specific.

I mostly agree with people judging other people based on looks since it happens a lot in school. People usually judge someone else just based on the way they look, such as, their hair, their clothes, and their shoes. Back then, people probably judged greasers a lot since many greasers were hoods, and most people didn’t care if you were a good person underneath, most people just care about your appearance, and after that if they stereotype you right away, they probably won’t even try to get to know you. With socs and greasers, everyone favored socs because they dressed nicely, had neat hair, and had money. It didn’t matter to them that most of them got drunk and jumped innocent people.

I agree with the fact that people judge people based on their appearance. People who are dressed nice will generally have more public appeal than people who are dressed like hoods. Also people will probably tend to trust the person who looks nice. In the case with the Socs and greasers, the Socs don’t get blamed for crimes if their not caught because they look innocent and nobody suspects them. The greasers on the other hand, get all the rough breaks

Yes, I agree with this statement. I agree with it because when two people meet, they usually judge them on their looks. They do this because they can't assume anything about the person. The only way they can judge them is by their looks. For example, if a tourist was to visit the city where the greasers and Socs live, the tourist would rather meet with and get to know the Socs because of their looks and their wealth. No tourist would want to live and meet the greasers because they feel that the greasers are low class. What the tourist probably wouldn’t take into consideration how they are on the inside.

I think people usually judge someone by their looks. If someone comes to school in rags, most students would judge the person as stupid and worthless because of what they are wearing instead of taking the time to know the person. Ponyboy, at the beginning of the book, judges socs as rich kids who get everything they want and cold-blooded after he takes time to know a couple of socs, he thinks twice.

I agree and to what Ponyboy says about “ people just go by looks”. Most people judge you on what you wear or how you wear your hair, but they never know if your personality until they talk to you. Strangers who first look at greasers view them as uneducated and/or dirty because of their hair grease or their slouching walk, but they would never know that it is their trademark and their pride. Just like how Dally and Pony are actually smart and are able to go to college. Do not judge a book by its cover because you never know what is inside.

I do agree that people make assumptions about people by their looks. Every people have different personalities and are different, so it is not possible for someone to make precise assumptions of someone. Therefore, people try to match appearance with people they already know so they could make an assumption. That is why I agree with Pony on how people judge others by looks.

I agree with Pony that people usually go by looks, because nowadays people just seem to judge you by what you wear. For example, if I see a homeless guy on the streets, I just automatically assume that he/she is a poor, underfed person because of the shabby clothes worn. Unfortunately, I will also assume the person has bad manners and a bitter background. On the other hand, when I see a superstar on TV acting as a caring, exemplary person, I just immediately assume that they are nice in reality. Although I repeatedly remind myself, "don't judge a book by it's cover", I always find myself subconsciously assuming their background by how they look. That's just human instinct; what you first see gives you the main impression of the person.

I agree with Ponyboy when he says that people usually go by looks. It’s like that saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” The key thing is that, even though people say this saying, most people still judge by looks the most. When Ponyboy is comparing the Socs to the greasers he’s saying that even if the greasers were better people on the inside, most strangers, who don’t know them, would steer clear of them. Just because they look scary and they look like they could be trouble, most people would avoid them and blame them for most of the fights in the city. In the middle of the book, Pony says that because the Socs had money and looked clean cut and nice, the judge would still blame the greasers for something the Socs started. The Socs may be mean, but to most people in society, the Socs would always be the better people no matter what they do.

I agree with Ponyboy that people tend to judge others based on how they look. I think that people tend to judge people by how they look because when I saw a person that is suspected for murder and they don’t look very pretty, even though that person wasn’t guilty, I instantly believe that that person is the murderer. Also, one time, when I saw a women walking and collecting donations, I thought that that person was faking it because of her unprofessional looks. She looked like a normal person. Now, I regret it because maybe that person was really collecting donations for the poor kids in Africa. I instantly believed that she was doing it for herself.
I agree with Ponyboy that people tend to judge others by their appearances.

I agree because a lot of people judge people by their looks. Socs dress nicely and they are clean. Even though some of them could be mean and cold-blooded, people don’t care because their Socs and their rich and they do nice things every so often so people think of them as good people. On the other hand, greasers don’t dress nicely and they cause trouble. They are poor and they are known for mugging, and stealing, and fighting so people think they are bad people. Also, Socs are in the news for sometimes bad things but sometimes good things. However, greasers are in the newspaper for bad things and rarely good things so they are known to most people as a bad example. So by the way they look, people they automatically think they are bad or good people.
