Consider Henry Bemis' situation in the Twilight Zone episode "Time Enough at Last." Answer all of the following questions.
1. Explain irony. Give an example of an ironic situation.
2. Imagine that you were in Henry Bemis' situation. What would you have felt and done if you were the last person alive on the planet?
3. What would you do if you had all the time you needed to do whatever you wanted? Why?

1. Irony is when something happens that is completely opposite of the expected outcome. For example, in The Lie, Dr. Remenzel specifically told Eli Remenzel not to ask something of the Whitehill staff as if Remenzels were something special. In the end, Dr. Remenzel ends up doing so, which is ironic.
2. If I were in Henry Beamis’s situation, finding that I was the last person on Earth, I would both panic and jump with joy. First, I would look for grocery stores that have food left from the explosion. Then, I would try to find some books to read. Once I have found both of those, I would read as much as I can get my hands on. Later on, when I have read a lot of books, I would make a makeshift bag using leftover materials in the grocery store, and stuff as much food and books in there as possible. After, I would travel in one direction in search of civilization.
3. If I had all the time I ever wanted, I would most likely start with playing computer games until they get repetitive. Then, I would watch television for a few hours. After that, I would read books until I can barely open my eyes anymore. Perhaps I would consider doing some geometry or something of the sort, because eventually I would become so bored of “entertainment” that I would resort to looking for academic things.
At home, usually I do not have enough time to entertain myself. It’s always, “Go do your homework! Stop reading, find something useful to do!” However, once I have all the time in the world, I would probably get bored of entertaining myself, and find myself trying to recreate the scenarios at home, and actually doing what my parents did tell me to do.
1. Irony is when something happens that is different/the opposite of what was expected to happen. An example of an ironic situation is when you attempt to ambush sixth graders with a giant snowball rolling from on top of the hill, but the snowball melts and you end up getting rolled over by the sixth graders' giant snowball instead.
2. If I were the last person alive on the planet, I would...wonder whether I was really the last person on the planet. After all, who says I'm the only obsessive-compulsive reader who was hiding in the vault during their lunch hour. I would probably try looking for other survivors, but eventually would decide that if there are any survivors, then they are on a different continent, so I have no hope of ever meeting them. Unless he/she/one of them was a pilot and could manage to somehow find a plane that still worked and would try finding me.
I would then proceed to look for someplace with food, so that I wouldn't starve, and possibly try to see if the nearest hospital had anything left in it in case I hurt myself or got sick. I'd drag anything I could find to the food, or the food to the used-to-be hospital, depending on what there was less of.
Then I would look for something to do. If I didn't find it, I might start looking for some quick and preferably painless way to kill myself. If I found it, then I would start doing whatever it was I had found to do.
Eventually, I'd become depressed at the loneliness and look to kill myself anyway. I would find something to do it with, but wouldn't be able to do it. And unless the aforementioned pilot person did exist and came to rescue me, or else I found something terribly important or fun to work on, in the next two years, I would probably kill myself in the end because I couldn't stand the loneliness.
3. If I had all the time I needed to do whatever I wanted, I would probably read, play at the computer, watch TV, and hang out with my friends, because that is what I usually do in my spare time. (I'm assuming that this question is actually only just the question, putting aside the whole 'only person on the planet with nearly everything interesting that existed in the fifties bombed' concept.) Another thing I would do is finally complete the medical terminology workbook that I meant to finish over the summer, but could never find the time. As stated in the question, time is not important here.
