Consider the excerpt we read and your small group discussions. Have you ever felt discriminated against? Or have you witnessed someone being discriminated against? If yes, explain. How did you feel?
What do you think could or should be done to stop discrimination?

On discrimination

For as long as I could remember, I don't recall being discriminated against. But I witnessed one of my friends being discriminated against. I went to one of my friend's house to play games and have fun. But one of my friends were rejected at the door by my friend's mom because he was black. I felt terrible and I thought it was really messed up. Later on, after I got home I invited hih to my uldhouse and my mom allowed him to sleep over.
My thoughts on how to stop discrimination is that the people who discriminated others would think how they would feel. Yeah, that's about all I got. I witnessed discrimination but I don't really know any ways we could do to stop discrimination.
I have never been discriminated against, but I have witnessed others being discriminated. I remember quite a while ago, I was in a small Chinese restaurant in China Town. When an African American family entered in, the owners seemed very annoyed. They sat down, and started talking, obviously waiting for the waiter to come. However, instead of a man in an apron coming out to take their order, the manager came out. He told them that they couldn’t be here, and that their restaurant was allowed to refuse service. When the family didn’t understand what he meant, the manager plainly told them that they were not welcome here. My family and I knew what was happening, and I felt so awful. I couldn’t believe that someone could get kicked out just because of their skin color! I had read about it many times in books about Martin Luther King, but I didn’t realize that this was still happening today!
I think that people should just get to know other races better. From what I’ve learned, certain races have an “attitude” that some people think all races of that kind act like. I think that if they just learn to get to know different races better, people could learn to accept them the way they are! I had just watched a video the period before about a language immersion program. It was a program where foreign students could learn English and other languages (like Chinese, Spanish, etc.) I saw African, American, Chinese, and so much more in a classroom learning Cantonese! Many of the kids said that they thought the culture they had experienced was amazing. I think if more people could have different races around them and learn their different cultures, then they will begin to accept them the way they are, ending stereotypes, which will end discrimination.
